Division 2 receives a large number of reports and applications for investigations every year. Most of these investigations uncover measurable evidence that provides prosaic explanations. Here is one particular case that was investigated in Camden on 18th 2008. The name of the reportee has been changed for privacy reasons.
Robert gave us a brief description of the phenomena he has been experiencing within and around his residence. These include:
- Orbs and faces captured on IR CCD.
- Figures and shadows appearing in main bedroom which has led Robert to relocate and sleep in the living room.
- Audible phenomena such as tapping, movement of doors and voices.
- Strange residue appearing on mechanical chair (therapeutic)
After a thorough assessment and investigation of the premises we have come to the following list of conclusions:
- Orbs are a result of airborne particles. Video footage captured with previous CCD placed against window glass in laundry indicate out of focus anomalies moving across screen. The most likely causes are small insects moving across the outer surface of the window. The face that seems to be in one spot but fading since it was first noticed may be caused by a compromised CCD lens or contamination within the optical system. As a result the symmetry of this aberration has produced a visual effect known as pareidolia.
- We conducted a general EMI level sweep of the interior. The main bedroom was the focus point. We found significant levels of EMR directly behind the bed (a stable reading of approximately 50 milligauss, occasionally peaking at or above 100 milligauss). Depending on other appliance operations, these levels can increase. Prolonged exposure to such levels of EMR can lead to neurological stimulations. Robert has experienced apparitions in front of his bed after waking up from 'deep sleep'. This phenomenon may be related to REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement), which also causes sleep paralysis, increase in blood pressure and irregular breathing patterns. REM sleep covers 20% of a standard sleep period and is associated with dreaming. During this time the brain activity is generally high. Brain activity at this time is similar to a hypnopompic state where visions, apparitions and voices appear. We feel that the EMR at those levels over a period of time may be the responsible cause for these conditions. Furthermore, the brain being exposed to high levels of EMR can have adverse effects and can contribute to serious medical conditions. We have advised Robert to turn the bed around where levels are below 1 milligauss (EMR penetrating from the lounge room). It has been noted that Robert's personality has changed over a period of time (mood swings, lethargy, intolerance). Excessive REM sleep may be the prime contributor. We feel that the alterations may improve his condition.
- While investigating the premises, we did note tapping and thumping in the living room and in the hallway. Some of the noises were produced by fish bumping into the tank, temperature variations in the structure of the dwelling causing movement (creaks and other abrupt noises), holes in the external walls (fibro) may have invited vermin.
- The most likely cause of the unusual residue on the chair is some form of leak from the mechanical structure within the body. Robert said that the chair 'clunks' ever since, which adds credence to this theory.
It is our opinion that the events occurred at (address withheld) are not paranormal in nature, but rather a variation of natural occurrences.
